The importance of parental involvement in education

Being a good parent for one's child is every parent’s dream. But it is usually connected with only providing materialistic things or comforting facilities to the child. Along with this it’s also very important to spend quality time with the children. It is said that a child is fully under control of its parents till the age of emotional maturity. One of the ways to be an integral part of the emotional world of your child is the involvement in their education. For an average 20 years one keeps taking formal education through institutions. Parental involvement is much necessary during the period of pre-primary, primary and middle high school education. Children learn most new things during these years. Hence, it is necessary to have support, help from parents in learning new concepts.

Parental involvement in education is crucial to a child’s success in school. Studies have shown that children whose parents are involved in their education are more likely to succeed in school and in life. They are more likely to have higher grades and test scores and are less likely to drop out of school. They are also more likely to have better social skills and to be more successful in life.

Here are some of the ways for parental involvement in education:

1. Start asking children how their day went -

First of all, it is very necessary to ask children about their school life daily. They must be open to their parents about their friend circle, professors and progress in studies, etc.

2. Look after their studies -

Parents can go through their children’s textbooks and notebooks. They can help them to do their homework. They can read them stories or chapters in the textbook. For mathematics, parents can prepare a worksheet containing sums for children to solve.

3. Stay connected with their professors and tuition teachers -

Along with the children, it is important to stay connected with their professors and tuition teachers about their progress. Do look forward to the parents-teachers meetings.

4. Help children to know their strengths and weaknesses -

School life is the best place which helps children to form the foundation of their personality. Along with the academics, it’s important for students to participate in extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities like volunteering or performing help students develop communication, management, technical skills, etc. Eg. Student helping in management of annual gathering of school will develop management skills needed to organize any event. Students who are in the lead position in the classroom or some department in school organization will develop leadership skills.

Parents must encourage students to develop their personality through diverse experiences.

Through these tips, parents can help their children to be the best version of themselves.
